Personal Biographies

Bruce Hammond, President ~ CEO

I grew up in Pasadena, California and have been influenced by the diverse styles and high level of architecture prevalent there. I also have a fondness for the architecture traditions that have arisen from indigenous peoples around the world in direct response to their environment. The clean lines of the Norse boat building and Japanese joinery traditions have inspired and influenced me as well .

The materials uses and excellence of proportion of the American Arts & Crafts tradition and in particularly the architecture of Charles & Henry Greene, Bernard Maybeck, and Frank Lloyd Wright have been great examples.

These building and design traditions kept alive the direct link between materials and their appropriate use, between craftsmanship and community. They hold a spirit that is an essential part of our connection to life and to place. In the modern world, these are values that we can increasingly see the need to return to, as feedback about our impacts on the natural environment grows. We have the opportunity to carry forward a basic wisdom that resides in them in our vision for the future. This direction holds out promise and inspiration for me , and is the area of my lifetime learning and commitment . . .

After school at Humboldt State University where I studied psychology , sociology, and anthropology, and a brief period in Santa Cruz , I moved to Sonoma County where I have been a resident since 1978. I am a committed husband, and father of four children. For many years I have been a student of the Japanese martial art Aikido and currently hold a blackbelt in that art. I am also an avid gardener, backpacker and fly fisherman. I am one of three founding directors of the "Ridge Trail Institute", a non profit educational organization offering retreats & training opportunities for men, youth, and couples.

Broc Croll, Vice President ~ Superintendent

I grew up and still have family in southern Colorado, near Pueblo. After school at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I studied Fine Arts, I moved to Fairfax, California to pursue my interest in studying Indian music at the Ali Akbar College . In 1980 I brought my background in the visual arts to applied woodworking projects, and began working with Hammond Fine Homes Inc... During much of the last 20 years I have pursued the study of traditional Japanese construction methods. We have had the unique opportunity to have a close association with Makoto Imai, a traditionally trained Japanese master carpenter. His influence has had a significant impact on our work techniques and processes and we have looked for opportunities to embody this learning in all our projects.

I am married and am father to a highly imaginative young son. My ongoing interests include parenting, fine woodworking projects, whole grain beer brewing, and computer based design & desktop publishing. I also hold a black belt in the Japanese Martial Art of Aikido.
