The open beamed Great Room creates a grand
living space for everyday activities and entertaining.
Skylights and French doors bathe the room in the
incomparable and ever-changing light of northern
California, as well as access to outdoor patio areas.
Built-in cherry cabinetry create a wonderful sideboard
area for dining.
The limestone faced fireplace is an energy efficient
"Rumford" design that throws a high percentage of its
heat into the Great Room rather than out the flue.
Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, began
studying fireplaces in the early 1800's. Typical
fireplaces were very smoky and failed to perform the
function for which they were built—to properly and
efficiently heat the room. He studied the dynamics of
heat, and designed a fireplace that today remains the
most efficient, powerful, and aesthetically-pleasing of
all fireplaces.
The large, airy gourmet kitchen is every cook’s
dream. A top of the line Kitchenaid refrigerator
and Viking gas range are well located to provide
easy access for cooking.
A central island with a prep sink provides plentiful
counter and storage space.Granite counters and
maple cabinetry provide a warm and delightful
space for preparing meals and entertaining. The
beamwork at the front entry utilizes traditional
Japanese woodworking joinery and details that
enhance the beautiful salvaged old growth redwood
used for the columns and beams. This system of
woodwork utilizes close fitting wooden joints (tsugi)
to provide strong but flexible hidden connections
between the wood structural members.
Members of the HFH team have worked with
Japanese Master Carpenter Makoto Imai over the
last twenty years to develop their practice of this
beautiful style of woodworking.
