Developed by the United States Green Building
Council, LEED stands for Leadership in Energy
and Environmental Design. It is a performance-based
system designed for rating new and existing
buildings according to their overall environmental
impacts. It evaluates performance from a "whole
building" perspective over a building's life cycle,
and has rapidly become the national standard for
providing a definitive measure for what constitutes
a green building.
LEED comprehensively evaluates a buildings impact(s) through a series of carefully weighted assessments in the following areas:
- Sustainable site selection & development
- Energy demands & atmospheric emissions
- Material & resource conservation
- Interior environmental health
The United States Green Building Council is a
coalition of leaders from across the building
industry that works to promote buildings that
are environmentally responsible, profitable, and
healthy places to live and work.
LEED, and its overall approach formed the basis for the comprehensive reductions of negative environmental impacts achieved at Oak Glen.
